The Home Assistant SkyConnect was designed to be the perfect pair for Home Assistant users, offering an easy connection with Zigbee and promising future support for Matter specifications through a firmware update from Home Assistant itself.
This device allows for easy and quick firmware updates via USB Over-The-Wire (OTW), supporting both Zigbee and Matter. It is an EFR32 Series 2 adapter (Silicon Labs EZSP v8) capable of emitting signals with a power of +20 dBm and is compatible with high-speed USB 2.0 when used with the provided USB extender.
The equipment is based on a Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 SoC, incorporating a 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.15.4 radio MCU for multiprotocols, capable of simultaneously managing Zigbee 3.0 (EmberZNet/EZSP) and Thread (OpenThread/Spinel, including Matter/CHIP over Thread) technologies through RCP (Radio Co-Processor) mode firmware.
Direct local serial communication will be performed through an integrated USB to UART bridge/converter, likely a chip from the CP210x series from Silicon Labs.
To facilitate interaction with the Ember stacks for Zigbee and Matter, Home Assistant will provide a plugin, ensuring regular firmware updates to optimize the user experience with the Zigbee/Matter adapter. The USB device is Plug and Play, fully compatible with Home Assistant's Zigbee home automation integration, promoting an accessible approach for newcomers.
